Pledging to a God
Pledging to a God
Can my character become a follower of one of the gods?
» Yep! Pledging to one of the gods is possible but not to be taken lightly. You can receive boons for it, but there can be negative effects as well. Be warned that breaking oaths of service to either god carries great weight and comes with serious consequences. You don't need mod approval to follow a god and receive blessings nor do you need it to break out of service, just be aware of the general mechanics and play how it suits you.
Swearing oneself to a god provides additional effects from curses and blessings for characters. So long as your god is pleased, serving Sinne or Ciemra can grant certain boons: protection in the Temple from your enemies, a boost in currency and pleasure gained from Objectives and tribute offered to your patron deity, and a general, almost addictive feeling of good health and strength. Characters are also granted access to special powers that are explained further down this page. However, on the flip side, should the deity you follow not receive enough tribute and curse The City out of anger, you will also suffer additional curse effects: nightmares, fevers, hallucinations, and general weakness and enervation.
How much or how little of the blessing and curse effects you wish to play with each month is up to you! Go with what’s going to be most enjoyable, and feel free to add additional consequences if they're going to be fun to play with.
So why pledge to one of the gods?
» The perks are pretty great. In addition to getting a free heal, the gods grant those who pledge service to them additional powers.
» Pay tribute to the god you're pledged to without betraying them by offering to its opposing deity. Some months may include extra opportunities to curry favor by completing optional goals (e.g. the gods grant extra boons and status to those followers who complete at least three objectives this month, or complete other tasks for them) but mostly it's about the tribute and pleasing the god you're sworn to.
How do I please the gods?
» Offering tribute, mainly. We go into detail on that and the boons you can receive over here. There may be additional opportunities to curry favor with your god by completing tasks that will be included in the monthly events by the mods.
Okay, but how do I pledge myself to a god?
» Simply go to the appropriate temple and swear an oath to that deity. All current wounds will be healed, you will find yourself full of vim and vigor, and free of any bad dreams for three days before the effects fade into the general blessing state of pleasant energy and increased health. You can use this as an emergency heal without having to pay other costs if your character finds themself in dire straights, but be warned that betraying a god after swearing to them comes with a hefty price.
Is swearing myself to a god permanent?
» The gods would like it to be. But since that's not always fun OOCly, it's possible to break your oath by paying tribute to and asking for intervention from the opposite god. Generally there are a variety of unpleasant consequences from the god whose service you're leaving if this happens, but it's not required that you play these out. Your character is released from the god's service as soon as you decide to play it out or handwave it happening, and you can start playing out the consequences immediately. Regardless of when that is, the consequences will last through the entirety of the following month, and what the consequences actually are is up to player discretion.
Is there any physical sign of being in service to one of the gods?
» Sure, if you want! A mark or tattoo can appear on your body, gold and/or red if you're in service to Sinne, and black and/or purple if you swear to Ciemra. You can decide on design, placement and level of pain from receiving the mark, if you want to play with any of that. It's entirely optional, and ICly no one is sure why some people get marked and some don't.
Is there a consequence to paying tribute to the god I'm not in service to?
» Yes. The following month after tribute is collected your character will suffer a cursed effect whether or not their god has cursed The City. What this curse is is up to player discretion, but if you need some ideas, feel free to contact the mods for some help!
What if I'm paying the opposite god to break my oath or a Master/Servant contract?
» Regardless of the reason, offering tribute to the god opposing the deity you serve will result in your character spending the following month under a cursed effect. You must also wait two months before swearing to a god again after breaking an oath.
Do I need permission from the mods to swear to/break from a god's service?
» Nope. These are the guidelines of what to expect from swearing to or breaking from a god, and we'll let you know if anything changes. So go on, be free, do what your heart tells you.
To pledge to a god or break from a god's service, comment to the spreadsheet below with your character's name, the god they swore to, and the date. Add in the date of oath breaking if they leave a god's service.

- Pledging to Sinne
- Your character will be granted fully functional wings of light with their design of the player’s choice. These wings can be “turned off” and hidden, but when they’re manifested, they act as real wings with full sensory input.
- Your character will also gain the ability to harness the power of light, conjuring and wielding weapons of pure energy with enough practice. Your strength and stamina will increase, and wounds will heal faster.

- Your character will also gain the ability to harness the powers of darkness, using shadows to teleport short distances. Your speed and eyesight will be enhanced, and your senses will sharpen.
If you choose to swear yourself to Sinne, the god will lend you its strength as a warrior in its service.
If you choose to swear yourself to Ciemra, the god will lend you its strength as a warrior in its service.
