Tribute

Tribute
What is tribute?
» Tribute, or rather gathering it, is the whole reason the gods of this world have brought you here. Essentially, tribute is the energy generated by memories and emotions that the gods use to keep this broken world from falling apart entirely, and, if enough excess tribute is gathered, to unlock new parts of the world and access to new powers. It's in your best interests to bring the gods tribute every month — no more world means no more you — but there's always a choice.

You just may not like the consequences of that choice...

How do I collect tribute? Do I need to thread out collecting it?
» Tribute is collected in two ways:
  • Raiding ruins: Explore the ruins outside The City and find the mysterious artifacts at their hearts. These artifacts contain the memories of this world (and maybe worlds beyond this one) and these memories are the fuel the gods use to keep the world intact. Since they contain the memories of worlds, each artifact has its own inherent power that characters can use as long as they possess the artifact.

  • Completing Objectives: Each time a character completes an Objective, some amount of power is gathered in the charm they received upon arriving in The City. At the end of the month, characters can take their charm to one of the Temples and offer the power as tribute. (See the Objectives page for more details.)
You don't need to thread out ruin exploration or completion of Objectives every time, but the ruins are full of interesting things to interact with and completing Objectives is a great way to jumpstart threads with other players.

What do these mysterious artifacts in the ruins look like? What do they do?
» Pretty much anything you want. A cursed amulet that gives you cat ears? Clothes that make their wearer crave sex? A completely useless carved wooden bowl? An infinitely complex advanced power core? Sure, any and all of that. Artifacts come in many forms and not all need to be immediately sent to the gods for tribute. The more interesting and/or useful artifacts can be used by characters for shenanigans and exploits.

Who decides what kind of artifacts I find in my exploration?
» You do. If you want a bunch of tribute fodder clay pots, go for it. If you want to find a super future tech iPad with the latest version of Granblue Fantasy, knock yourself out. Need an excuse to turn your character into a child for a day? Maybe you find a cursed watch! Want a way to push your character into a particular sexy scenario? There's an an artifact for that. The types and effects artifacts possess are entirely up to players.

Can I sell artifacts to NPCs for currency?
» Not any more! After the events in game around April and May 2017, the NPCs no longer wish to buy artifacts. In fact, NPCs look upon those who try to sell to them with varying levels of disdain. However, as NPCs no longer wish to be in possession of artifacts, you may still find shops selling particularly interesting objects with useful or amusing effects if you so wish.

How do I use Objectives as tribute?
» Upon arrival to The City your character will be given a piece of jewelry (called a Fetish), and if they wear it while completing Objectives energy will accumulate within it. They can touch this piece of jewelry to the altar of either god (or to both altars, to split the power between them) in order to release the energy as an offering of tribute. This counts as tribute for monthly AC and you can weight the amount of energy gathered from each Objective to numerically determine how much stored energy your character has managed to accumulate. Please keep in mind our tribute cap for mod sanity when turning in AC.

Since the gods want as much power as they can get for tribute, more intense, emotional, sensual, or violent Objectives may be good picks for tribute Objectives to collect the most energy, though it’s ultimately up to player preference. In the same vein, the more lucrative in tribute energy an Objective is, the more addicting it may feel to do, as the gods’ influence pushes characters to crave completing these Objectives in order to gather more power for the world. Keep this in mind while choosing which Objectives count as tribute and pick ones that will be the most fun for you to play!

What does the Fetish look like?
» Whatever you want! A gaudy necklace? An elegant ring? A refined earring or bracelet? Tongue piercing? Whatever appeals to you. All Fetishes must have some kind of gemstone or crystal embedded in them that may glow as they begin to reach capacity for energy.

Can my Fetish or artifacts be stolen?
» Yes. Obviously at player consent, but if you want to play someone who steals charged tribute jewelry or gathered artifacts, or play out having them stolen from you, you're free to. The gods don't care where the tribute comes from, only that they receive it. A new Fetish can be issued by the temples at any time, though.

Can my character turn in tribute other characters have gathered?
» Sure can. Given, traded, or stolen (with OOC consent), characters are free to pass tribute around. The original finder or owner doesn't need to be the one to turn an artifact or piece of jewelry in. You can even make a business of gathering extra artifacts for the purpose of supplying other characters if you want. Just don't double up tribute in AC turn ins if you're giving or selling them to other characters. If Jane gathers ten artifacts and gives Bob five and they both turn in all their artifacts as tribute, they should both note five each in the AC spreadsheet.

Pleasing the Gods
» Rather than gaining status over time, characters receive boons from the gods in the form of better housing and amenities. Initially, characters are brought to the world and given one month to stay at a temple until they need to find lodging elsewhere in The City. Players decide if the tribute their character has given has pleased the gods enough to grant them access to better housing or gift them a bonus in funds. This leaves characters’ lifestyle and quality of housing advancement as slow or fast as players wish it to be!

Does my choice of who to send tribute to affect the game?
» Yes. Tribute turn in is a major factor in setting updates, and there are set effects that happen when one of the gods receives certain amounts of tribute or when one of the gods does not receive certain amounts of tribute. They're jealous bastards, you see.

What happens if I don't give tribute to either god?
» Then they will both be displeased and won’t hesitate to show it. You will start to feel unwell: nausea, headaches, vertigo, fatigue, and trouble sleeping, all lasting the entire month until you cough up some tribute to either of the gods. Fail to offer tribute two months in a row and the second month will up the ante with severe weakness, blurry vision, fainting, nightmares, and extreme fatigue, memory loss, disorientation, fevers, and other major symptoms of sickness. Also the occasional spot of having bits of your body turn a tad translucent, like they’re just one step away from disappearing entirely, or the haunting feeling that you're losing parts of yourself.

Why? Because the gods are expending energy to keep you and this world intact, and if they’re not getting a return on that expenditure, they don’t see a reason to keep it up. After all, power is a precious thing when it’s all that’s keeping reality from coming apart at the seams. If you want to keep existing in this world, then you’d better start offering your own fair share of power to the gods to help them shore up reality.

Fail to offer tribute for three months in a row and you will die — not just die, but unravel. Your soul, consciousness, and physical body will no longer be sustained in the world, and it will take a special ritual to bring you back. The gods will not automatically revive you if you die this way.

The first and second month you fail to offer tribute, the cat Messenger will leave an ominous warning urging you to offer something to the gods or face an unfortunate loss of self — and everything else.

How does my character revive if they die from lack of tribute?
» Since the gods aren’t willing to expend power to keep you bound to this world, a revival requires that power to come from elsewhere. Your friends (or frenemies, or people you owe money to — anyone invested in your continued existence) must offer something to the gods equal to the cost of your revival. Usually this is a sacrifice of a blood offering or tantric energy (or both) but any kind of large offering that provides a massive amount of power will work. Gather thirty artifacts? Sure. Rouse a huge burst of energy from a crowd by performing a dance number? Go for it! Anything works as long as it’s generating enough memory or emotion based power for the gods.

You may suffer some side effects after being hideously and slowly unravelled from reality and then being put back together, but what those are and their duration is up to player discretion.
