Gods, Blessings, & Curses
Gods, Blessings, & Curses
Who are the gods?
» They're these two assholes who've used their phenomenal cosmic power to bring you to this world and trap you here. Why? They want tribute — artifacts from the ruins outside the city's walls or energy generated by completing their Objectives — and they can't be assed to leave their impenetrable temples at the center of The City to go get it themselves. Once a month they grant blessings or visit a curse or wrath upon The City based on the amount of tribute offered at each of their temples. One of the assholes is a god of light called Sinne and the other is a god of darkness called Ciemra, and they are, in true cliche form, locked in some kind of cosmic competition.
Why are they in cosmic competition?
» According to a divine messenger known only as the cat, because they're both assholes. Turns out, there’s not actually much left of this universe. For some unknown reason, the whole thing’s falling apart, and it’s all the gods can do to keep the patch known as The City together. Keeping even a little of the universe intact takes massive amounts of power and what the gods do have is constantly being used up to maintain this little expanse of reality.
The tribute the gods want in sacrifice contains the memories all the dead things that were destroyed when this universe fell — along with the memories of worlds beyond this one, all brimming with the power they need to to keep the world chugging right along. Give the gods enough tribute and they can not only keep this world alive a little longer, but also grow it. Fail to supply them with enough power, and this world will finally die — and you along with it.
The cat won’t say more right now, but one thing’s for sure: the gods want attention, devotion, and a whole lot of tribute left at their doorsteps.
Who (or what) is the cat?
» No one is sure, but the cat himself claims to be a messenger of the gods since long ago, and the temple priests call him the Messenger with a capital m. He complains that he's retired, but he'll answer questions if you leave a little fish (or string or a cat treat) in the copper bowl at his shrine located between the temples of Sinne and Ciemra. Leave an offering he likes and ask a question, and if it's anything ICly available on any of the OOC settings pages, your character will get a truthful answer in the form of a purring voice in their head. The cat's shrine appeared in March 2017.
What if I ask about Sinne?
» The cat will tell you this: Sinne is the younger of the two gods (they're twins, you know, so it hardly matters) and is the god of Light. Sinne favors truth and straightforwardness, and their aspects encompass conquest, force, subjugation, and control. On a more positive end, Sinne also encompasses the aspects of bounty, harmony, and joy. Sinne's loud. But honest. They talk big and they feel big and they're also kind of a big crybaby. Or, at least, so says the cat. The cat, or priests, or fellow people trapped in The City depending on where you get this information, may tell you that blessings and curses from Sinne will follow the themes of the god’s aspects, and it's rumored that the powers Sinne offers do likewise. The cat might also mention, in annoyance, that Sinne is a dog person.
What if I ask about Ciemra?
» The cat will tell you this: Ciemra is the older of the two gods, and the god of Darkness. Ciemra favors stealth and cunning and their aspects include deception and subterfuge, deceit, subversion, seduction, and corruption. On the more positive end, Ciemra is the god of music, serenity, knowledge, and dreams. Ciemra's sneaky and underhanded. Don't believe a word they say. But they'll reward ambition. They have a sweet tooth, so don't leave any treats out around them unless you’re willing to lose them. Or, so says the cat. The cat, or priests, or fellow people in The City depending on where you get this information, may tell you that blessings and curses from Ciemra will follow the themes of the god’s aspects, and that the powers Ciemra offers do likewise. The cat might also mention, in grudging approval, that Ciemra is a cat person.
So what about these blessings and curses?
» Sinne and Ciemra bestow either blessings or curses on The City based on the amount of tribute each god receives (or doesn’t receive). It's possible for The City to be blessed or cursed by both gods at the same time. City-wide blessings and curses are noted in the game's monthly mod updates, as those generally pertain to setting changes.
Generally, blessings create a welcoming atmosphere in The City and provide good things for characters. Curses make The City an unpleasant place to live, and if the gods are displeased by a constant enough lack of tribute, they may even afflict The City with a wrath — a powered up curse that brings not only extremely unpleasant effects for all inhabitants of The City, but can also be life threateningly dangerous.
It’s in characters’ best interests to try to make sure that both gods are pleased each month. However, there is no OOC requirement to do so, and you’re free to have your characters turn in or not turn in tribute as fits their personalities. On an OOC level, both blessings and curses will provide setting changes and other effects for characters to interact with each month, so there is no OOC penalty for activating one over the other.
Can my character become a follower of one of the gods?
» Yep! Pledging to one of the gods is possible but not to be taken lightly. You can receive boons for it, but there can be negative consequences as well. For example, if you follow Sinne but Ciemra receives more tribute one month, the following month you may find The City's blessing reversed to a curse on you. Also be warned that breaking oaths of service to either god carries great weight and comes with serious consequences. You don't need mod approval to follow a god and receive blessings nor do you need it to break out of service, just be aware of the general mechanics and play how it suits you.
