What kind of business can I create?
» Whatever you want. You can make a business your character runs or add an NPC business to flesh out the world. NPC or player businesses can also provide hiring opportunities, bounties, and events for other players to work with, so be creative! We've set up an example business if you need something to look at.

Is there a limit to the kind of residence my character can have?
» When your character first arrives they'll be offered a month's stay in one of the temples. During this time, they should seek alternative lodging, because after the month's up... Well, the temples are busy, they're not here to be a bed and breakfast. Characters are free to leave the temples at any time before the month is over and the only limit to the kind of housing they can move to is what you the player desire. They can live in a palace, a cave, a suspiciously TARDIS-like phone booth, whatever you want. (Just remember that you can't actually travel through time or out of the world if it's a TARDIS.)

Generally, characters will not have immediate access to their own palaces as their new lodgings, but by offering tribute to the gods they can earn boons (determined at player discretion) that can include upgraded housing and amenities. Characters can also put in the IC work to earn new lodgings (e.g. go conquer that castle!). Where characters live is not moderated, and their progression to a new and possibly more swanky lifestyle is at whichever rate players wish it to be. This can be within weeks or more slowly, depending on what's most fun for you to play. Use this progression to shape the life style you wish your character to engage in while they're in the game.

What exactly is the layout of the city?
» The rough layout has the gods' Temples in the city center, with the city proper divided into four districts, one for each cardinal direction. This is only a rough guide, though, due to The City's patchwork nature.

    • The City Center is home to the twin temples of Sinne and Ciemra as well as the shrine of the Messenger cat. The temples serve as starting dorms for characters newly arrived to the city, as well as places of worship and healing. A large, inert magic circle lies midway between the two temples and serves as a useful landmark.

    • The East District is primarily residential, with the southeast sector being... well, frankly, slums. The slums are cheap and probably where you'll live to begin with, unless you're lucky or please the gods fast.

    • The West District is primarily agriculture and animal husbandry to the north and manufacturing and industrial to the south.

    • The North District is where a lot of the markets and more standard mercantile shops are.

    • The South District is the entertainment sector, providing anything from karaoke bars to bordellos to gladiator rings. The South District tends to be the shadiest of the four but also has all the really fun stuff.

Do I have to keep this layout in mind when making a business or residence?
» They're good guidelines for the main layout, but no, you can have a player residence or business in any district. But if you're creating an NPC business, try to create it in the related district.

Gwenhyfar's Apothecary and Druidic Consultation - Player Run

[personal profile] cauldronkeeper 2017-01-22 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
This shop is located in the southern area of the Northern District, where customers from the Entertainment district can easily access it. It is a cozy looking two story wooden building with a steep shingled roof, and a chimney that occasionally issues colorful smoke. A pair of menacing stone gargoyles stand guard in front of the door.

At this shop you may buy potions and medicines crafted by the Druid Gwenhyfar mar Neisha (and potentially assistants, if she gets any), with a focus on healing and aphrodisiac effects. She also offers the use of her services to a client as a magician, or custom made potions for a fee. She sometimes sells magical ingredients and items that she comes across but does not need herself. More discretely, she also is able to provide poison.

She will pay for useful magical ingredients, books providing magical knowledge, bodily substances from magical beings, guinea pigs for her potions, and assistants in rituals or the preparation of her products.

Current Residents:

Hiring Opportunities: Gwen's current profits are too low to justify full employees, but see above for things she is willing to pay for. She also may be interested in business arrangements with other entrepreneurially minded mages.

Come as You Are Studios-NPC run

[personal profile] branchy 2017-01-31 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
aka that sleazy porn studio.

Located near the eastern edge of the Southern District, this is a hole-in-the wall run by one creepy producer. No one knows his name, probably because he actually refuses to tell anyone and insists they should just know, because he used to be mega-famous back in the day, apparently. In any case, Mr. 70's creeper here runs a porn studio that caters to any and every desire. There are countless settings and plots, and a kind of magic that settles over anyone who reads the scripts, making them think they've always been their role, that they're just living another day in their lives instead of trying to act through a really bad porn plot.

In other words, this is a place where you can freely play out AUs. Or awful porn dialogue. Or a place where a bunch of BDSM stuff is in one spot if you don't want to pony up the cash for your own equipment--despite being pretty sketch, there's certainly a lot of condoms, lube, and aftercare material lying around in the studio for your use as well. If your character is reluctant, Mr. 'Stache is in possession of a drugging cologne. Smelling it or getting it sprayed in your face makes you easily compliant to suggestion. All fake "memories" are gone immediately after completion of the shoot.

Current Residents:
Mr. 70's mustache creep, and his faceless, nameless, featureless crew.

Hiring Opportunities:
Luckily for you, the studio is always looking for talent! They pay you in either money (not a lot, tbh) or a small item from home. Repeat workers and people who become "stars" (varied or very, very niche work with lots of fans) will get better rewards as well. Stop on by whenever you wish.

North and Sound District Public Libraries - NPC run

[personal profile] ghostfromthemachine 2017-03-30 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
The City is currently home to two major libraries: one in east side of the North district, and one in the south. The branch in the Sound District is both larger and has a more... varied collection, shall we say, but you have to pass through a red light district or two to get to it. Since both libraries are part of the same system, though, you can technically request a book from the South to be delivered to the North for pickup if you're squeamish or something.

Both have a variety of people in their employ.

Hiring Opportunities:
Since working in a library isn't as lucrative or glamorous as some of the other methods of moneymaking that can be found in or outside of the City, there are almost always positions open for pages and library assistants. Librarian openings are more rare.
