Setting Changes

Setting Changes
DOING THINGS TO THE SETTING AND WANT TO MAKE THEM OFFICIAL? PUT THEM HERE.

If you're just adding businesses or residences head over to this page instead.

Still here? Right, so you want to make major changes to the city? Blow up a district, take it over for your criminal organization, turn half of it into a forest, destroy the food supply, or anything else that might affect the entire player base?

You can!

But there's a caveat. Because changes this large have the potential to affect every player in the game, you must make an OOC plotting post (to the OOC comm, NOT on plurk) at least one week before the changes would be implemented (i.e. a week before the end of the month at minimum) giving other players a chance to chime in on whether or not they're okay with a change. You don't need unanimous approval but you do need majority approval. If someone has problems with what you're proposing, try to be considerate and find a compromise that will work for everyone. For example, if you propose turning the city's north district into an RPG lava level and someone living there doesn't want their house set on fire, work in a temporal warp mechanic that would allow their house and/or business to be transported to a safer part of the city, or have the lava only spread to bits of the city below a certain altitude, etc.

Once you've got majority approval from the player base for your proposed setting change, write up the changes and how they happened, as well as any other notes and a link to your plotting post, and post them in a comment here. The changes will be implemented the next month.

My proposed change didn't get majority approval, but I already threaded it/I really really want to play with a setting change but not have it be a permanent thing, what should I do?
» You don't need to retcon your thread or hold back! Go ahead and play out with the setting change, it'll just turn out that this time whatever damage was done was miraculously repaired and reset after about a day.

Wait, if things reset why can we change the city? Why doesn't it always restore itself?
» Because it only resets when it's OOCly convenient for us, of course.

So I can blow things up without making it a major plot change?
» Yep! But if it's a player residence or business get their permission first, even if it's going to reset.

Then what's the purpose of major setting changes?
» For fun! If the majority of the player base wants to try to turn the City into a floating sky island or wasteland, or force the NPC populace out of the gates, or any other major plot, the game allows for it.

Are there any other ways I can permanently affect the setting besides large-scale changes?
» Yes, absolutely! You can also effect changes on the setting with your character's response (or lack thereof) to monthly mod status effects and events. At the beginning of each month, the mods will announce the results of last month's AC tribute collection, city-wide status effects or setting changes resulting from that, as well as a few other things happening in the game's world. If your character chooses to engage with anything in the mod announcement, comment here with what that was before the end of the month.

For example, if the mods announce that nagas have infested the city, you can respond to this post with how your character reacts to this infestation. They may hunt down the nagas, negotiate with the nagas, kidnap nagas for scientific experimentation, whatever. Tell us what your character did and the responses will guide what happens in the setting following the event. Choosing not to engage with any of the events in the mod announcement can also affect events for the following month.

For the purpose of the game, "engaging with" simply means commenting here. You can thread out reactions to mod announced events without commenting here, but your actions in those threads will not affect anything game-wide, as we simply can't keep track of everyone's threads and actions. If you want your actions to count towards influencing the setting, they must be reported on this post. There's no need to pre-approve actions with the mods or link to threads, just briefly state the involved characters and their actions. This allows for slow-moving threads or reactions being handwaved in the background and is easier on everyone.

How major are the setting changes in the monthly mod announcements?
» It varies from month to month. Some months may have major, city-wide changes, other months may have more localized area of effect changes. The setting changes provided by the mods each month are there to offer extra things to engage with, incentives to pursue other game mechanics, or just fun things to do.
